Give me a sign...
Saturday, June 18, 2005 at 8:17AM Has anyone watched "Hit Me Baby One More Time?" It's that new TV show where they dredge up music stars from ages ago and make them sing the original hit that made them famous and then make them cover one of today's pop hits. It's mostly a big fat disaster, in my opinion, but I have to say I was riveted this past week when I heard Wang Chung was going to be covering "Hot in Here" by Nelly... I'll pause and let that one sink in...
Anyhow, they suckered me (I'm such a tough nut - HA!) into watching it with that one tidbit of information. I mean, I would have been downright negligent if I had not watched that potential catostrophe, right? The full lineup was:
Wang Chung (of "Everybody have fun tonight, Everybody Wang Chung tonight" fame)
Irene Cara ("What a Feeling" from Flashdance)
Sophie B. Hawkins ("Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover")
Cameo ("Word Up"... I'll give them two words up if I ever have to hear that song again.)
Howard Jones ("No One is to Blame" - the only one I actually liked the first time around)
Now, right off the bat, I thought everyone but W.C. and H.J. sucked hard. And word to Cameo, it's time to put away the red plastic codpiece, for the love of God. Not to mention the sequined top hat with feathers. Seriously. Irene Cara ran out of breath, strutted around in an 80's power suit with big shoulder pads, and attempted to bust a move with a couple of pelvic thrusts. Sophie B. Hawkins, well, she just escaped a loony bin and is destined for life in an aging-hippie commune or some such. Howard Jones is older and much shorter than I recalled, but he did a pretty decent cover of Dido's "White Flag". And I'll be damned if W.C. didn't do a good cover of Nelly. I never would have believe it, but there you go.
Unfortunately, the dimwitted audience, get this, proclaimed Irene Cara the winner! ACK! I give up.
